Raven Transformation
This mask is crafted from a blend of various woods, including rich purple wood and durable mahogany. In Inuit culture, ravens hold significant symbolism, often representing transformation and connection between humans and the spirit world. The raven is seen as a trickster and a creator, bridging the gap between the physical and spiritual realms, embodying the deep ties Inuipaq tribes have with nature and their beliefs. This mask not only showcases exquisite craftsmanship but also serves as a reminder of the vital relationship between ravens and the human experience within these communities.

Early Morning Walrus
The series highlights the effects of climate change in the walrus populations in the American arctic. Warming seas contribute to the disappearing sea-ice in these regions that contribute to the declining walrus populations. Lack of sea Ice in the late spring months make it harder for walrus to mate. Land base walrus haulouts have also become more extreme, the number of some haulouts reach 35,000 walrus in one place. In these large hall outs trampling events become more common and add the the disparity of the situation. Carving the masks, providing the copper whiskers, and different expressions represent how the shift in elements are impacting walrus experiences concurrent to the cultural and economic experiences of indigenous peoples.

Point of No Return Black
This series is depicting the point of no return for the escalation of temperatures in the arctic and the de-thawing of the permafrost. The dance mask demonstrates the reality arctic peoples are facing as their communities are experiencing unprecedented changes. If permafrost melts is pervasive, it will release large amounts of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and potentially release release other possible dangers. It is predicted that 1 gigaton of CH4 and 37 gigatons of CO2 will be released into the atmosphere by the year 2100 if climate change is not addressed and human behavior does not change the earth’s ecosystems would fall apart. This exceeds the amount that had been released during the dawn of the industrial revolution. The different colors of the gas masks represent the need to support and listen to indigenous voices as they are among the first to confront dramatic changes. The ring represents a new cycle, with reverence to the continuity of arctic peoples cultures at this juncture as indigenous cultures have ample experience adjusting to dramatic changes.

Owl to Person Transformation Mask
This mask is a depiction the relationship of the snowy owl and Iñupiat to the arctic lands. The owls main food staple, lemmings, are threatened by climate change because they need deep fluffy snow to insulate them from the elements of the harsh arctic winter. Lemming population numbers are dwindling under this new pressure and the owls existence is also being threatened because the lemming are a part of their primary diet. Humans are facing a similar fate and our indigenous food systems are under a similar pressure. The owl transformation mask has another layer of meaning as both owls and Iñupia are experiencing dispersion and displacement with the seasons out of balance and diminished food supplies.

In Our Nature
In Our Nature is a full-scale human figure carving made from a single piece of cedar with depictions of BLM protests, presence of organized labor, and equitable transit including waterways. My inspirations are rooted within traditional Inupiaq carving, which always tell the stories of their time. Life size carvings are not common within arctic regions because of the scarcity of wood. This figure embodies the experiences of workers standing in solidarity with diverse populations. The material, cedar is long-lasting as are the need for true commitment to action and transformative change. The connection of labor to place and people is sometimes overlooked, therefore I thought it important to tell stories using a contemporary version of endangered art. The idea of carrying these values forward is an important aspect of this work and reflects back to workers connections to ecosystem, in the literal sense and a key component to movement building..

Sold Loon Generations Protector
This piece reflects the effect of Climate Change on bird egg production in the arctic, which is phenomenon that occurs in other parts of the world during warming trends. Producing an abundance of eggs has led to poor egg development and a decrease in healthy offspring. This devastation is more overt in bird populations in the arctic due to the extreme changes within the far north. Centralizing the egg at the center of the carved piece depicts the birds longing to survive and protect their legacy.
